Ben Roberts Smith

Ben Roberts-Smith is a former Australian Army soldier who served with the Special Air Service Regiment and was deployed on overseas operations in Afghanistan. Standing approximately 198 cm tall, his physical presence is unmistakable, and the image leans into that scale and recognisability to produce a direct, uncompromising portrait.

This piece was produced in response to a public challenge from Peter Drew, who argued that Australian identity should be fluid, superficial, and unbound, and who challenged critics to create “something positive that people actually want.” This poster is one contribution to that conversation.

Printed in Melbourne on high-quality, heavyweight poster paper and designed for indoor display, the composition is deliberately minimal, imposing no narrative and offering no instruction. It is a visual object only.
